How to practise for the EPSO numerical and abstract reasoning tests

Most preparation advice for these tests is either "do lots of questions" or "buy our course". Neither tells you the thing that actually decides the outcome: what to practise, in what order, and when to start using a clock.

Short answer

Practise for six to eight weeks in short daily sessions of 20 to 30 minutes, not in a few intensive weekends. Start with the free official sample tests published by EPSO on the EU Careers site to learn the format, then move to a larger bank of EPSO-style questions.

Build method before speed. Spend the first five or six weeks untimed, one question family at a time — ratios and cross-multiplication, estimation, percentage change, then the abstract pattern families. Add the clock only around four weeks before the test, once accuracy is stable.

The one thing worth paying for is corrections that show the reasoning. An answer key teaches you nothing you did not already know. What changes your score is seeing which number should have gone on the bottom of the fraction, and why the tempting option was built to catch exactly that mistake.

Where to find practice material, free and paid

There are four categories, and the honest answer is that you will probably use three of them. Starting with the free official material is not a compromise — it is the correct first step, because it is the only source written by the organisation that sets the real papers.

Start here, whatever else you do

Sit the official EPSO samples before spending anything. They cost nothing, they show you the real interface, and they tell you which of the two tests is your weak one — which is the information that should decide where your money and weeks go.

A word about verbal reasoning

The EPSO computer-based battery has three reasoning tests, not two: verbal, numerical and abstract. This page and this site cover numerical and abstract only, and it would be misleading not to say so before you build a plan from it.

Verbal reasoning gives you a short passage and asks which of several statements follows from it. It is excluded here for a reason rather than an oversight: it is the test that depends most on the language you sit it in, so the method transfers far less well between candidates, and it responds less to the kind of pattern drilling that works on the other two. If verbal is your weak test, budget separate time for it and look for material in your own language 1 — most of the established EPSO preparation providers cover all three.

How that changes the plan below

If you need all three tests, keep the structure and add a fourth weekly session for verbal from week 1, rather than squeezing it into the numerical and abstract days. The reason is the same one that makes mixed practice work: switching between modes is a skill, but only once each mode exists.

The 6-week plan, week by week

The order matters more than the volume. Every week below assumes 20 to 30 minutes a day, six days a week.

Why the clock arrives so late. Timing yourself while your method is still forming teaches you to rush a procedure you have not yet automated — which produces exactly the failure mode the test punishes: confident, fast, wrong. Accuracy first makes the later speed work cheap; the reverse does not hold.

What good practice material has, and most does not

  1. Corrections that show the reasoning. Not "the answer is B" — which value went on the bottom of the fraction, and why. This is the single criterion that separates useful material from expensive material.
  2. Distractors that correspond to real mistakes. In a well-built question, the wrong options are the answers you get from the four common errors, not random numbers. If you can spot which mistake each wrong option represents, the question is teaching you something.
  3. Questions where the data is not all in the table. This is the EPSO signature, and generic aptitude material rarely reproduces it.
  4. Answer options spaced deliberately. Sometimes far apart, so estimation wins; sometimes close, so it does not. Learning to read that spacing before calculating is worth more than any arithmetic drill.
  5. A daily structure you will actually follow. The failure mode of a large question bank is not that it is bad — it is that you do 200 questions in week one and none in week five.

Five mistakes that waste weeks

The detail almost every preparation plan skips

EPSO sessions are delivered either at an accredited test centre or under remote proctoring, and the two give you different tools. At a centre you get a pen and paper. Remotely, you do not — physical paper and pen are not allowed, and note-taking happens in an on-screen scratchpad.

Typing an intermediate result into a scratchpad is slower and clumsier than writing it. That difference is small per question and decisive across ten of them at two minutes each. Find out which format applies to you before week eight, and spend the timed phase in it.

If you only have three weeks

It happens, and the plan is not simply "do the six weeks faster". Compress by cutting breadth, not method:

What you give up is the spacing that makes recognition automatic. What you must not give up is the untimed start: even three days of it beats three weeks of rushing a method you never built.

How long should I prepare for the EPSO reasoning tests?

What you are building is recognition speed, and recognition is built by spaced repetition. Cramming produces candidates who can solve every question type slowly — precisely the profile the time limit filters out.

Are there free EPSO practice tests?

Can I use generic numerical reasoning tests instead?

Partly. Generic graduate aptitude tests drill the same arithmetic, so they are useful early. They differ in two ways that matter later: EPSO items frequently require data that is not in the table at all, and the answer options are spaced deliberately so that estimation beats exact calculation. Use generic material for the mechanics, EPSO-style material for the pacing.

What is the best way to practise abstract reasoning?

Learn the seven pattern families before doing volume, then run a fixed scan order on every item: count, position, rotation, shading, size. Confirm your rule on a second transition, and picture the next figure before looking at the options.

Is it worth paying for practice material?

Only for one thing: corrections that show the reasoning. An answer key teaches you nothing you did not already know. If paid material does not explain its answers step by step, it is a more expensive version of the free samples.

How many practice questions should I do?

Roughly 150 to 250, reviewed properly, beats a thousand rushed through. The limiting factor is review, not exposure: a question you got wrong and then understood is worth ten answered on autopilot. Four to six a day for six weeks lands in that range naturally.

Should I practise with pen and paper, or on screen only?

Whichever matches your session. EPSO tests are delivered either at an accredited test centre, where you are given a pen and paper, or under remote proctoring, where physical paper and pen are not allowed and you get an on-screen scratchpad instead. Your invitation states which.

It matters more than it sounds: typing an intermediate result into a scratchpad is slower than writing it, and six weeks of habit built on paper does not transfer. Check the format before the timed phase starts, and practise in it from week five.

Should I practise numerical and abstract reasoning together?

Separately at first, together from about week six. The two are marked against a single combined threshold in many recent Notices of Competition, and mixing them also trains the switch between two very different modes of attention — which is what the real session demands.
